What n8n Is

n8n is a workflow automation platform for connecting apps, APIs, and AI systems. Its visual canvas makes the steps and data flow in a workflow visible.

It offers a self-hosted Community Edition as well as paid hosted and self-hosted plans. Check the official pricing page for current options; a free software edition does not eliminate hosting, maintenance, or connected-service costs.

Licensing and Hosting

n8n follows a fair-code model. Its source is available under the Sustainable Use License, with separate terms for Enterprise code. Describing it simply as open source misses those distinctions.

Licensing matters for some commercial, embedded, and client-hosting uses. Check the current official license terms and the requirements for your specific use case before choosing a deployment model.

When It Helps

Consider n8n when a workflow spans several services and you want to inspect how data moves between steps. Visual orchestration can make an integration easier to explain and adapt, while code or API requests can handle steps that need more control.

That makes it relevant to LogicBoat's automation subject matter. The LogicBoat Foundation documents the publication itself: it runs without n8n. This guide does not claim an implemented or tested LogicBoat automation.

Important Limits

Workflows still need credential management, error handling, and checks for the behavior of connected services. Self-hosting also requires operating and maintaining the instance. A visual workflow does not remove those responsibilities.

A small script may be a simpler choice for a single task that needs no visual orchestration. Choose the tool that makes the system easiest to understand and maintain.
